REAR ADMIRAL WILLIAM M. FOLGER
While in command of the battleship USS Kearsage, he signed this check to the Metropolitan Club of Washington.
Check signed: "W. M. Folger", 7x2¾. Washington, D.C., 1900 December 16. Un-numbered check, drawn on the Riggs National Bank, payable to "Metropolitan Club of Washington, D. C." for $5.00. Entirely filled out by Folger. William M. Folger (1844-1928) graduated from the US Naval Academy in time to serve as a midshipman in the Civil War. In the Spanish-American War, he commanded the cruiser USS New Orleans in action off Cuba. Joining the Philippine Squadron in 1899, he saw action in the Philippine-American War. When he signed this check, he had taken command (February 20, 1900) of the new pre-dreadnought battleship USS Kearsage, the lead vessel of her class. Rising to the grade of Rear Admiral, Folger would command the US Asiatic Fleet prior to his retirement (1905-1906). The Metropolitan Club of Washington, founded in 1863, has been a meeting place for national leaders ever since. Its clubhouse is on the National Register of Historic Places. Small tear on top edge. Corners lightly worn. Cancellation holes. Ink stamp on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
