Smoot signed this typed letter, on LDS letterhead, in 1936 to thank Claude T. Barnes for his birthday wishes. He signed this letter after retiring from the United States Senate to become an apostle of the Mormon Church.
Typed letter signed "Reed Smoot". 1 page, 8¼x10¾, on Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints letterhead. Jan. 11, 1936. Addressed toMr. Claude T. Barnes, First National Bank, Salt Lake City, Utah. In full: "Dear friend Claude: I appreciate greatly your letter of January 10, the date of my birthday. I thank you for your sincere friendship in the past and I express the hope and belief that that friendship will continue as long as I live. I was a dear friend of your father and of the other remarkable men mentioned in your letter. You are to be congratulated upon having had such an outstanding, faithful and devoted father. With best wishes for your future happi-ness and success, I remain Yours Sincerely, Reed Smoot B." Smoot (1862-1941, born in Salt Lake City, Utah) was a Republican U.S. Senator from Utah from 1903-1933, during which time he co-authored the Smoot Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, an act that raised tariffs and helped to erode confidence in the United States stock market in the early days of the Great Depression. A former businessman, Smoot retired from both government service and business in 1933 to serve as one of the twelve apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon Church). At the time of his death, Smoot was next in line to succeed the President of the Quorum and third in line to succeed the church's President. Lightly toned and creased. Two slightly torn binder holes at top. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically. Otherwise in fine condition.
