Actor sends letter to John Willis, editor of Theatre World, apologizing for being unable to attend the award party that year
Autograph letter signed: "Reid Shelton" in black ink. 1 page, 6x9. Written on personal letterhead. May 3, 1978. In full: "Dear John, I'm terribly sorry that I won't be able to attend your Theatre World Award Party this year as the university I attended in Oregon is honoring me on the same day at the same hours at Sardis. Thank you for asking me". Reid Shelton (1924-1997) was an actor of stage and film, beginning with an appearance in the Broadway play Wish You Were Here (1952). He appeared in several more Broadway plays, with his starring role in Annie (1977) earning him a Tony Award nomination and Theatre World Award nomination. His roles in television and film were more minor, with his most prominent role being Coach Ernie Denardo in 1st and Ten: The Championship (1984). John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Normal mailing fold. Corners creased. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
