REMBRANDT PEALE
The renowned portrait artist sends a letter at the age of 82, he would die the following
year.
ALS: "Rembrandt Peale", 1p, 5x8 ruled sheet. Philadelphia, 1859 June 6. To Mr. W. L.
Kingman. Begins: "Dear Sir". In full: "In reply to your polite note of May 31, I have the
satisfaction in my 82d year to sign myself Respectfully Yours". Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), the
son of portrait artist Charles Willson Peale, was himself primarily a portrait artist, known as
an elegant stylist with an ability to capture three-dimensional forms and the personalities of his
subjects. Perhaps best known for his portrait of George Washington (1795), Peale, at age
17, was the youngest artist to paint Washington's portrait. Peale, who also painted a
celebrated portrait of Thomas Jefferson, made five trips to England and the Continent, where
he first studied under Benjamin West. Over his 60-year career, Peale painted over 1,200
works, which also included landscapes and historical scenes. Slightly creased with folds, not at
signature. Lightly shaded at lower portion and mid-left margin. Stray ink marks at upper right
blank edge. Overall, fine condition.
