MORGAN DIX
Letter referencing his father's brief (but famous) tenure as Secretary of War
during the James Buchanan Presidency
Autograph Letter signed: "Morgan Dix", 1 page, 5x8. Laurence, Queen's
County, New York, August 17, 1885. To Alonzo Page Walton, in full: "In reply
to your letter of the 3rd inst., which reached me today, I have to inform you, that
my father, General Dix, was Secretary of the Treasury during the closing weeks of
President Buchanan's administration; and that he was succeeded in that office by
the Hon. Salmon P. Chase of Ohio, who was appointed Secretary of the Treasury by
President Lincoln on or about March 4, 1861. Very truly yours. Morgan Dix
(1827-1908), was an Episcopal minister and theologian. He published many
books on the Bible and other aspects of Christianity, as well as collections of
his sermons. He was associated with New York's Trinity Church for over 50
years. His father, Major General John Adams Dix (1798-1879) earned hero
status in the North when, as Treasury Secretary in 1860, he ordered Treasury
agents to "shoot on sight" anyone attempting to take down a US flag. A
Democratic U.S. Senator before the war and a Republican Governor of New York
after it, he was a Major General during the Civil War, giving his name to Fort
Dix. Adhesive residue at top edge. Lightly creased and toned around edges.
Corners creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
