The religious leader signed this letter and sent it to a New York resident
Autograph Letter signed: "Morgan Dix", One page, 8x10½ . Dated July 15,
1896. To W. L. Stone. In full: "I cannot sign it as I am not a member of the
Society of Colonial Wars. Morgan Dix (1827-1908), was an Episcopal minister
and theologian. He published many books on the Bible and other aspects of
Christianity, as well as collections of his sermons. He was associated with New
York's Trinity Church for over 50 years. His father, Major General John
Adams Dix (1798-1879), earned hero status in the North when, as Treasury
Secretary in 1860, he ordered Treasury agents to "shoot on sight" anyone
attempting to take down a U.S. flag. A Democratic U.S. Senator before the war
and a Republican Governor of New York after it, he was a prominent General
during the Civil War, giving his name to Fort Dix. Mailing creases. Note in
pencil in unknown hand in bottom left corner. Top edge heavily toned.
