REX ALLEN
Check for $9.62 written to the famed Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood, gathering place of movie stars
Check signed: "Rex E. Allen", in blue ink, 8½x3¼. Hollywood, California, 1959 April 10. Check #6885, drawn on the account of Rex E. Allen at the Bank of America, payable to The Brown Derby, 1628 N. Vine St., Hollywood for $9.62. Countersigned by a representative of Beverly Management Corp. Singing cowboy Rex Allen (1920-1999) appeared on stage, rodeo and radio (National Barn Dance) before beginning his film career. In a span of five years (1949-1954) he made over 20 Westerns, many featuring sidekick Slim Pickens, and Allen's horse Ko Ko. Allen starred in TV's Frontier Doctor (1956), and was the narrator in many films, including The Incredible Journey (1963) and Charlotte's Web (1973). The original Brown Derby Restaurant, shaped like the hat, was opened in Los Angeles in 1926. A second location, the one featured here on Vine Street in Hollywood, opened on St. Valentine's Day, 1929. Located close to major film studios, it became a famous meeting place for movie stars and gossip columnists. It was featured in an episode of I Love Lucy, in which Lucy accidentally causes a waiter to hit William Holden, seated in the next booth, in the face with a pie. Clark Gable is said to have proposed to Carole Lombard while dining in this restaurant. This restaurant closed in the early 1980s, but replicas are being built in several of the Disney parks. Bank processing stamps (not effecting signature). Lightly creased. Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
