The author writes to a friend in the hospital saying "Everybody at
St. Andrew's asks me about you and seems to suspect that I broke your
leg."
Typed Letter signed: "Rex", 1 page, 5½x8½. New York, New
York, 1930 June 28. On "322 Central Park West/New York" letterhead and
written to Mr. Robert H. Davis, c/o R.S. Ward, DeBruce, New York. In full:
"Dear Bob:- I'll bet the trout up there are not as wild as you are at
being laid up. Fred is coming here tonight and I'll show him your letter but we
can't join you and the heavy weights of art and athletics for the good reason
that Fred is leaving for California Saturday the 5th. Everybody at St. Andrew's
asks me about you and seems to suspect that I broke your leg. I don't know yet
what happened to you or how. Love, admiration and esteem. Sincerely,"Rex Beach (1877-1949) was a best-selling author of 14 adventure
novels set in the Northwest, some of which were made into films. The most
successful of these novels, The Spoilers, was made into a feature film
three times, starring respectively Gary Cooper (1930), John Wayne (1942) and
Jeff Chandler (1953). Beach committed suicide in 1949. Adhesive residue on
verso (light show through). Normal mailing folds. Light foxing. Pencil notes
(unknown hand) at top (not affecting signature). Slightly frayed at edges.
