REX BEACH
Letter to a young collector, advising him to consider applying to Rollins College
Typed Letter signed: "Rex Beach", 1 page, 8½x10. Sebring, Florida, 1940 December 18. To Daniel Paonessa, East Hampton, Connecticut. In full: "This will acknowledge receipt of your letter of December 10th about your collection. It is fine for a boy to have a hobby and you are free to add this note to your others. I came to Florida when I was about ten years old and at your age I was attending school at Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida. From there I went to Chicago to study law. Rollins College, as you may know, has developed into a very fine institution of learning and is probably the best known small college in America. If you expect to go to college, why don't you investigate Rollins and determine whether, in your opinion, it offers something hard to get elsewhere? With all good wishes I am, Sincerely yours". Rex Beach (1877-1949) was a best-selling author of 14 adventure novels set in the Northwest, some of which were made into films. The most successful of these novels, The Spoilers, was made into a feature film three times, starring respectively Gary Cooper (1930), John Wayne (1942) and Jeff Chandler (1953). Beach committed suicide in 1949. Beach was the first President of the Rollins College Alumni Association; he and his wife are buried in front of the alumni house. Creased with multiple mailing folds. Corners heavily creased. Edges lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
