BLACK ACTOR WHO PLAYED GOD IN GREEN ACRES SIGNS TO PLAY THE DEVIL IN CABIN IN THE SKY
REX INGRAM. Partly Printed DS: "Rex Ingram" on verso, 2p, 8¾x21½, front and verso. No place, 1942 July 9. Ingram signs a Screen Actors Guild Minimum Contract for Free Lance Players, on M-G-M letterhead, signing to play the part of "Headman" in a photoplay titled Cabin in the Sky for $1,000 per week. Stage and screen actor Rex Ingram (1895-1969) appeared in many films from 1929-1967, including King Kong (1933), The Emperor Jones (1933), Green Acres (as "De Lawd", 1936), Huckleberry Finn (1939), The Thief of Baghdad (1940), The Ten Commandments (1956), God's Little Acre (1958) and Elmer Gantry (1960). Cabin in the Sky, a lavish film version of the hit Broadway musical, featured several of the greatest African-African stars of the period, including Lena Horne, Ethel Waters, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, and a trumpet solo by Louis Armstrong, as well as Ingram as "Lucius Lucifer, Jr." (Few southern theaters showed the film in 1943.) Frayed at upper edge. Light wear at left and right edges. One-inch paper separation at left edge of horizontal folds. Minor light creases. Overall, fine condition.
