REX TRAILER
Signed magazine photo of him in Western garb
Inscribed Magazine Photograph signed: "Hi Warren!/ Rex Trailer",
4x4½. Slip of paper bears a picture of an American Airlines plane and a
color magazine photo of Trailer. Rex Trailer (b. 1928) was a rodeo
performer by age 11. Famed Western "sidekick" Gabby Hayes hired Trailer to work
at his children's summer camp in the Catskills. In 1949, he began a long run
as host of local children's TV shows in New York (Oky Doky Ranch),
Philadelphia (1950-1956, also hosting a Western movie series) and Boston
(Boomtown, 1956-1974). His Western-themed shows featured his guitar
playing and rodeo tricks, and special guests. Trailer hosted youth-oriented
tours to Disneyland, which may explain his signing of this picture of an
airliner. Trailer also recorded Country and Western songs, including the
minor hit "Cowboys Don't Cry" (1955). Trailer became one of Boston's best
known TV personalities, a charter member of the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall
of Fame (1997). As of 2012, pending legislation proposes to name him the
official Massachusetts state cowboy. Still active, Trailer runs a video
production company and teaches on-air performance at Emerson College.
