RHYS ISAAC
Isaac's handwritten letter responding to a collector. Signed the same year he won his 1983 Pulitzer Prize.
Autograph letter signed: "Rhys Isaac", in black felt tip, 1 page, 5¾x8¼. May 9, 1983, La Trobe University, Bundoora Victoria, Australia. On his letter head at the Department of History, to "Dear Mr. Cleary", in full: "I am pleased to assist in your attempt. You do me the honour to enroll me-- by the proxy of my signature -- in a very special company of men & women. Thank you" and postscript, "I return the voucher you so kindly enclosed. Perhaps you can use it again in your avocation. It must certainly dispose people to co-operate with them if you are at pains to put them to no expense." South African born Rhys Isaac (1937-2010) is primarily known for his studies and research into American history, particularly of the state of Virginia. A professor in the United States and Australia, Isaac published his book The Transformation of Virginia, 1740-1790 in 1983, winning him the Pulitzer Prize for History and giving him the rare distinction of being the only Australian historian ever to win a Pulitzer Prize. Normal mailing folds. Fine condition.
