RICHARD ARLEN
Publicity photo for the film Let 'Em Have It, inscribed in person to
collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Good Luck/Richard Arlen".
B/w, 8x10. Publicity photo for Let 'Em Have It (1935), captioned in lower
margin. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: March 15, 1936.
Richard Arlen (1900-1976), born Richard Cornelius van Mattimore,
costarred with Buddy Rogers and Clara Bow in the World War I aerial adventure
Wings (1927), the first-ever Academy Award-winning motion picture.
(Though a US citizen, Arlen had been a pilot in the Royal Canadian Flying Corps
in the war, but hadn't seen combat.) One of Paramount's most popular leading
men in the 1920s and 1930s, Arlen continued to act through the 1970s. His
film credits include The Virginian (1929), The Santa Fe Trail
(1930), Helldorado (1935), Call of the Yukon (1938), That's My
Baby (1944), Hurricane Smith (1952), The Snows of Kilimanjaro
(1952), Johnny Reno (1966) and The Great Call of the Wild (1976,
his last film). Arlen starred as a gang-busting G-man in Let 'Em Have It.
Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his
love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities.
While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars
with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Scattered
light creases and surface marks. Overall, fine condition.
