RICHARD ARLEN
Vintage 3½x5½ candid photo of the actor standing in front of a classic Cadillac at a hotel entrance, signed in blue ink. Extremely Rare!
Photograph signed: "Richard Arlen," in blue ink. B/w, 3½x5½. Candid photo. Richard Arlen (1900-1976), born Richard Cornelius van Mattimore, costarred with Buddy Rogers and Clara Bow in Wings (1927), the first-ever Academy Award-winning motion picture (he would much later be reunited with Rogers in an episode of the TV sitcom, Petticoat Junction). One of Paramount's most popular leading men in the 1920s and 1930s, Arlen continued to act through the 1970s. His film credits include The Virginian (1929), The Santa Fe Trail (1930), Helldorado (1935), Call of the Yukon (1938), That's My Baby (1944), Hurricane Smith (1952), The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952), Johnny Reno (1966) and The Great Call of the Wild (1976, his last film). This photograph is from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane, Hawaii natives who moved to California in the 1920's. Francis Zane had a job at the historic Curran Theater and the San Francisco Opera House, which is where he began his massive collection, with photographs and materials ranging from the 1920's to 1960's. The location and luck of his occupation would land him smack dab in the middle of the celebrity world, allowing him to capture some of the most unique and interesting pieces of Hollywood History. Lightly bowed. Otherwise, fine condition.
