RICHARD ARLEN and BILLY ECKSTINE. Inscribed signatures: "To Louie -/My Best/Richard Arlen" and, on verso, "To/Louie/Sincerely/Billy Eckstine", 5¾x4 album leaf. RICHARD ARLEN (1900-1976), born Richard Cornelius van Mattimore, costarred with Buddy Rogers and Clara Bow in Wings (1927), the first-ever Academy Award-winning motion picture (he would much later be reunited with Rogers in an episode of the TV sitcom, Petticoat Junction). One of Paramount's most popular leading men in the 1920s and 1930s, Arlen continued to act through the 1970s. His film credits include The Virginian (1929), The Santa Fe Trail (1930), Helldorado (1935), Call of the Yukon (1938), That's My Baby (1944), Hurricane Smith (1952), The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952), Johnny Reno (1966) and The Great Call of the Wild (1976, his last film). Baritone BILLY ECKSTINE (1914-1993), the first Black romantic singer of popular music, had also broken down color barriers as the first leader of a bop big band. Eckstine, whose hits include "Prisoner of Love", "My Foolish Heart" and "I Apologize", influenced a number of soul and R&B singers, from Sam Cooke to Prince. Eckstine also played trumpet, valve trombone and guitar. Binding holes at blank right margin. Lightly rippled at lower right corner of verso from photo being affixed. Fine condition.
