RICHARD WHORF
Signed earnings statement for the Directors Guild, listing $75,525 in directing income for 1963 and estimating similar earnings in 1964.
Document signed: "Richard B. Whorf", 1 page, 8½x11. Los Angeles, California, 1964 February 21. His ink signature and hand printed address on a form submitted to the Directors Guild of America, listing $75,525 in income as a director in 1964, and an estimated $75,000 in 1965. (Annual membership dues were calculated from these earnings statements.) RICHARD BAKER WHORF (1906-1966) had an active Broadway career, debuting as an actor in The Banshee (1927), starring in some Shakespearean roles (including the title role in Richard III, 1949). He directed a few plays, and won a Tony for Best Costume Design (Ondine, 1954). While acting in, and directing some feature films, beginning with an onscreen performance in Midnight (1934), he was a larger presence on television. In that medium his directing efforts included multiple episodes of Have Gun, Will Travel, The Ann Sothern Show, Gunsmoke, My Three Sons and The Beverly Hillbillies (68 episodes of the latter from 1962 to 1964). Whorf was a talented painter, specializing in scenes of Americana reminiscent of Norman Rockwell. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
