RICHARD BASEHART
Moody b/w photo by John Engstead of actor Richard Basehart in a suit and tie, signed to Beverly Hills restaurant owner Joseph "Peppino" Micoli
Inscribed photograph signed "To the Pepinos [sic]/I Like the place, the food/and the company-/Best always/Dick Basehart". Red pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. B/w, 7½x9½, printed on cardstock. Photo by John Engstead of Beverly Hills, with photo credit stamped on verso in blue ink. Joseph "Peppino" Micoli was the owner of Peppino's Restaurant on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, California. It's been said that Basehart (1914-1984) would have been a more famous leading man if he had not been so good at playing villains. Fans of the TV series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, where he played Admiral Harriman Nelson (1964-1968), might be surprised by Basehart's screen portrayal of a brilliant sociopath in He Walked By Night (1948), or as such characters as Hitler, Robespierre, or Andersonville prison camp commander Henry Wirz. He also appeared on Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s. Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Signature has low contrast in places but is legible. Light chipping along edges. Pinhead-sized stain in top right corner. Corners are lightly worn, creased and rounded. Otherwise in fine condition.
