RICHARD BURTON and HARRY ANDREWS
Richard Burton and Harry Andrews sign a piece of paper.
Signatures: "Best Wishes/Richard Burton/Old Vic/1953" and "with every good wish,/Harry Andrews./Stratford-on-Avon.1953", 5x2¾ piece of paper. RICAHRD BURTON (1925-1984), a Welsh stage and screen actor with a magnificent voice, received seven Oscar nominations (for My Cousin Rachel, 1952; The Robe, 1953, Becket, 1964, The Spy Who Came In From the Cold ,1965; Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, 1966; Anne of the Thousand Days, 1969; and Equus, 1977), all but the first of these as Best Actor. Burton may be best remembered, however, for his tempestuous romances, failed marriages and movie pairings with Elizabeth Taylor, whom he met on the set of Cleopatra (1963). Burton spent the 1953-1954 season with the Old Vic company, where his roles included Hamlet. HARRY ANDREWS (1911-1989) was an English stage actor who starred several times on Broadway in Shakespearean and other classical roles (including Henry the Fourth and Oedipus Rex, both 1946). His film roles including many military parts, beginning with Paratroopers (1953). In Alexander the Great (1956), he played Persian King Darius opposite Richard Burton's Alexander. (The two actors appeared together again in the film rendition of Equus. 1977). Sandra Brennan of All Movie Guide observed of Harry Andrews: "Though almost always a supporting player, his performances often overshadow those of the stars." Lightly creased and soiled. Mounting paper remnants on verso show through lightly at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
