Album leaf inscribed and signed by Burton on one side, signed by Brooks on the other
Inscribed Signature: "To Sharon/Best wishes/Richard Burton", 7¼x4½ album leaf. Two small b/w newspaper photos affixed below signature. Also signed on verso: "Richard Brooks". RICHARD BURTON (1925-1984), a Welsh stage and screen actor with a magnificent voice, received seven Oscar nominations (for My Cousin Rachel, 1952; The Robe, 1953, Becket, 1964, The Spy Who Came In From the Cold ,1965; Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, 1966; Anne of the Thousand Days, 1969; and Equus, 1977), all but the first of these as Best Actor. Burton may be best remembered, however, for his tempestuous romances, failed marriages and movie pairings with Elizabeth Taylor, whom he met on the set of Cleopatra (1963). Novelist, director and screenwriter RICHARD BROOKS (1912-1992) saw his bestselling novel, The Brick Foxhole (1945) turned into the 1947 movie Crossfire, but with the murder motive changed from homophobia to anti-Semitism. Brooks had screenwriting success with noir films of the late 1940s, especially Key Largo, but received greater recognition in the following decade when he received 4 Oscar nominations for Best Director (For Blackboard Jungle, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Professionals and In Cold Blood. He notched Best Adapted Screenplay nominations for the first three of these, and won that Oscar for Elmer Gantry (1960). He was married to Elmer Gantry star Jean Simmons from 1960 to 1977. Jagged at right margin from removal from bound book. Lightly soiled not touching signatures. Otherwise, fine condition.
