Novelist, director and screenwriter RICHARD BROOKS (1912-1992) saw his bestselling novel, The Brick Foxhole (1945) turned into the 1947 movie Crossfire, but with the murder motive changed from homophobia to anti-Semitism. Brooks had screenwriting success with noir films of the late 1940s, especially Key Largo, but received greater recognition in the following decade when he received 4 Oscar nominations for Best Director (For Blackboard Jungle, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Professionals and In Cold Blood. He notched Best Adapted Screenplay nominations for the first three of these, and won that Oscar for Elmer Gantry (1960). He was married to Elmer Gantry star Jean Simmons from 1960 to 1977.
