RICHARD BURTON, JOHN NEVILLE and DEREK ROY
Card signed by the three eminent British performers
Autograph Sentiment signed:"Best wishes/Richard/Burton" and "All good wishes/John Neville" and, on verso, "'Bill' of the 'Queens'/gives you the drinks of your dreams/It's a pleasure to be thirty!/Derek Rey", 6x8 card. This wonderful card features signatures from two stars of the London stage, Burton and Neville, along with that of comedian Derek Roy. Burton and Neville were both members of London's Old Vic Company during the 1950's and often played Shakespearean roles. The two traded off the roles of Iago and Othello in the play Othello when they were members of the Old Vic Company. RICHARD BURTON (1925-1984), a Welsh stage and screen actor with a magnificent voice, received seven Oscar nominations for My Cousin Rachel in 1952, The Robe in 1953, Becket in 1964, The Spy Who Came In From the Cold in 1965, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf in 1966, Anne of the Thousand Days in 1969 and Equus in 1977, with all but the first for Best Actor. Burton may be best remembered, however, for his tempestuous romances, movie pairings with Elizabeth Taylor, whom he met on the set of Cleopatra (1963), and four failed marriages, two of them to Taylor. He was born Richard Walter Jenkins, Jr., the 12th of a Welsh coal miner's 13 children, but changed his last name to that of Phillip Burton, who helped him get a scholarship to Oxford. He got his start on the stage in 1943, but had his career put on hold when he was drafted into the Royal Air Force in 1944. After his discharge, he had his first hit in 1949's The Lady's Not For Burning. He began making movies in Britain in 1949, with My Cousin Rachel as his first Hollywood role. JOHN NEVILLE (1925-2011) was born in 1925 and, as of this biography, has appearances in over 80 TV shows and movies. Modern audiences probably know him best as Baron Munchausen from The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) and as the "Well-Manicured Man" in The X-Files. He was a member of London's Old Vic Company, where he played classical roles like Romeo in Romeo and Juliet and a popular performance of Richard in Richard III. He immigrated to Canada in 1972 and, in 2006, received the Order of Canada, which is Canada's highest civilian honor. DEREK ROY (1922-1981) was a comedian who enjoyed his greatest period of success during the 1940s and 1950s. He had his own BBC radio show, Hip Hip Hoo Roy, which comedian Spike Milligan helped write. He also starred in several TV series including Cinderella (1947) and People Are Funny (1955). In addition, Roy hosted Variety Bandbox, a talent show that featured performers such as Michael Bentine, Tony Hancock, Morecambe and Wise, and Peter Sellers. Lightly toned and spotted. Card has been neatly torn from a larger sheet on one side. Otherwise, fine condition.
