RICHARD CROOKS
The opera singer's signature on an album leaf bearing two magazine photos of
him, dated in 1932!
Autograph Sentiment Signed: "Sincerely/Richard Crooks/1932.", 5¼x4½
album leaf. Magazine photographs, b/w, affixed at upper margin and lower right
corner. Ink note (unknown hand) identifies date and place autograph
obtained: "New York, N.Y./Feb. 4, 1932". American tenor Richard Crooks
(1900-1972) made his operatic debut in 1927 in Hamburg, Germany as
Cavaradossi, the role in which he made his American debut in Philadelphia three
years later. Crooks made his debut at the Metropolitan opera in 1933 and
remained with the company for the next decade. He is best known, however, for
his recordings of ballads and for his hundreds of radio broadcasts, especially
as a regular on The Voice of Firestone (from 1932). It was on that
program in 1945 that Crooks failed to hit a high note, and he retired on the
spot. Lightly creased, vertical fold at the "ha" of Richard and one letter of
Sincerely. Slightly rippled in blank areas around photographs, stray ink marks
at upper left margin. Fine condition.
