RICHARD CUTTS
As a Treasury Department comptroller, he reminds an army general to send copies of documents to his office for auditing purposes.
Manuscript Document signed: "Richard Cutts", 1 page, 8x10. Treasury Department, 2nd Comptrollers Office (Washington), 1819 August 25. To General George Gibson, Commanding General Subsistence. In full: "Sundry accounts for provisions furnished recruiting parties etc., under special contracts, have been sent to this office, for revision, by the Third Auditor. As these contracts have not been deposited in this office, we have no evidence by which to test their correctness. I have to request that you will cause all such contracts, or certified copies, or abstracts thereof, to be sent to this office, that we may be enabled to act understandingly upon the accounts. Respectfully Sir, Your obedient servant". Richard Cutts (b. 1771-1845), a Democratic-Republican from Massachusetts, served six terms in the US Congress (1801-1813). He was married to Dolley Madison's sister Anna, making him President Madison's brother in law. Major General George C. Gibson (1775-1861), an infantry officer in the War of 1812, was the US Army's Commissary General of Subsistence from 1818 until his death. Multiple notches at left edge. Multiple mailing folds.
