A letter from the popular BBC broadcaster, thanking an associate for an invitation to a Ball, but saying he did not receive his letter in time
Typed letter signed: "Richard/Dimbleby", 8x10. March 9, 1948. In part: "Dear Mr. Grant, I owe you a sincere apology for having apparently ignored your invitation to attend the Ball last Friday, but I was away in Ireland and did not receive your letter until my return. Unfortunately that was after the Ball had taken place". Richard Dimbleby (1913-1965) was an English broadcaster and journalist, and was often considered the "Voice of the BBC". Originally beginning his news career with the Richmond and Twickenham Times, he eventually joined BBC as a radio news reporter in 1936, becoming their first war correspondent. During World War II, he flew on 20 air raids, and was the first to report of the Belsen concentration camp liberation in 1945. After the war, Dimbleby became one of BBC television's leading news commentators, and is best remembered for commentating on historical events such as Elizabeth II's coronation, JFK's funeral, and Winston Churchill's funeral. Normal mailing folds. Heavy surface creases. Toned on outer margins. Corners worn and creased. Small tears on edges. Hole in top left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
