RICHARD DIMBLEBY
A brief mass mailed letter from Dimbleby regarding the large response to the 1955 UK General Election, which has been regarded as one of the "dullest" post war elections
Typed letter signed: "Richard/Dimbleby", 5½x3½. June, 1955. In full: "So many viewers were kind enough to write or telegraph about the televising of the General Election that I am afraid it is physically impossible for me to reply individually. My colleagues and I hope that you will accept this acknowledgement of your thoughtful message which has been very much appreciated". Richard Dimbleby (1913-1965) was an English broadcaster and journalist, and was often considered the "Voice of the BBC". Originally beginning his news career with the Richmond and Twickenham Times, he eventually joined BBC as a radio news reporter in 1936, becoming their first war correspondent. During World War II, he flew on 20 air raids, and was the first to report of the Belsen concentration camp liberation in 1945. After the war, Dimbleby became one of BBC television's leading news commentators, and is best remembered for commentating on historical events such as Elizabeth II's coronation, JFK's funeral, and Winston Churchill's funeral. Surface creases. Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly soiled. Edges slightly worn. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Ink stamps. Otherwise, fine condition.
