His significant discoveries throughout the African continent as a paleontologist led to great fanfare. In 1989, he was named the head of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Department (WMCD) by Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi. A year later, he WMCD was renamed the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), which Leakey chaired. Leakey formed anti-poaching units that could shoot poachers on sight. In 1989, the Kenyan government held the first ivory burning ever under Leakey's guidance. By burning 12 tons of the valuable resource, they hoped to deter poaching. Since Leakey's removal from the Kenyan government, he has taught at Stony Brook University and formed the nonprofit organization WildlifeDirect. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
