RICHARD EBERHART and CHAIM GROSS
Shown together in this 5x3½ candid photograph
Photograph signed: "Richard/Eberhart/1986/(1986)" and "Chaim Gross", Color 5x3½. Richard Eberhart (1904-2005) wrote 20 books, including 12 books of poetry, beginning with A Bravery of Earth (1930). He won the Pulitzer Prize for his Selected Poems in 1966, and the National Book Award for Collected Poems in 1977. Beginning in 1950, he taught English at over a dozen universities, including 30 years at Dartmouth. He was Poet Laureate of the Library of Congress (1959-1961). He did much to popularize the "beat" poets, especially Allen Ginsberg, in the 1950s. Austrian-born graphic artist and sculptor Chaim Gross (1904-1991), who settled in the U.S. in 1921, is best known for his lively, naturalistic figure compositions carved in wood. His sculptures also include works in stone and bronze, and his common subjects for both his sculptures and other art works (which include covers for the United Nations) include circus performers, animals, female figures and Jewish tradition. Gross, who served as President of the Sculptors Guild of America, was the father of sculptor Mimi Gross. The New International Economic Order was a set of proposals by Third World nations to improve the terms of trade for less developed countries. Many of these principles commanded majority support in the UN General Assembly, where each nation has one vote, but without the active cooperation of the major economic powers like the US, or of the multi-national corporations, most of this design was never implemented. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
