RICHARD EBERHART
The poet inscribes a photocopy of his corrections to the poem "Slow Boat Ride", that was
sent to him by The New Yorker, which published the poem three months later.
Photocopy inscribed and signed in ink: "To John D. Buchanan/Greetings/Richard
Eberhart/Gainesville,/Florida/5/VI/74", 1 page, 8½x11. On April 16, 1974 The New Yorker
magazine sent this draft copy of Eberhart's poem "Slow Boat Ride" to him for proofing.
Eberhart made several corrections, mostly to the punctuation, visible on the photocopy. This
poem, one of many Eberhart poems published by the magazine, appeared in The New
Yorker on July 15, 1974. Richard Eberhart (1904-2005) wrote 20 books, including 12
books of poetry, beginning with A Bravery of Earth (1930). He won the Pulitzer Prize for
his Selected Poems in 1966, and the National Book Award for Collected Poems in 1977.
Beginning in 1950, he taught English at over a dozen universities, including 30 years at
Dartmouth. He was Poet Laureate of the Library of Congress (1959-1961). He did much
to popularize the "beat" poets, especially Allen Ginsberg, in the 1950s. Surface creases. Corners
lightly worn and creased. Small tears on left and bottom edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
