RICHARD FLEISCHER
He signed this typed letter in Rome in 1961, calling The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing
"one of my favorite pictures".
Typed Letter signed: "Richard Fleischer", one page, 7¾x11. Rome, 1961 May 17. On
letterhead of Dino De Laurentiis Cinematographica to George Sholly, Lebanon, Pennsylvania.
In full: "I am sorry that I have been so long in getting this picture to you, [Item not included.]
but as you can see from the postmark I am presently working in Rome and your letter did
considerable traveling before it came into my hands. I appreciate very much all the kind things you
had to say about my work and it was very thoughtful of you to take the time to write to me. I am
also happy that you enjoyed 'The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing' since it is one of my favorite
pictures as well. I find that it is more appreciated in Europe than it was when it was released in
the U.S. Again my thanks for your letter. Very sincerely yours". The son of animator Max
Fleischer (Popeye, Betty Boop), Richard Fleischer (1916-2006), who won an Academy
Award for Best Documentary Feature for Design for Death (1947), later directed such films
as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing (1955), Fantastic
Voyage (1966), Dr. Dolittle (1967), The Boston Strangler (1968), Che! (1969), Tora! Tora!
Tora! (1970), The New Centurions (1972), Soylent Green (1973), Mr. Majestyk (1974),
Mandingo (1975), Ashanti (1979), The Jazz Singer (1980), Amityville 3-D (1983) and
Conan the Destroyer (1984). Fleischer, who was the licensee of his dad's cartoon creation,
Betty Boop, published his autobiography, Just Tell Me When to Cry, in 1994. Lightly soiled
on top edge. Otherwise fine condition.
