Typed Letter signed: "Dick" as US Senator, 1 page, 6¼x8½. Washington, DC, 1982 December 7. On his Senate letterhead to W. Ernst Minor, Council on Environmental Quality, Washington, DC. In full: "Many thanks for your thoughtful message about my selection as Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. I am sober but excited about the challenges to be met throughout the next two years if we are to fulfill the Committee's goal of preserving a Republican majority. I hope that you will never hesitate to call and share with us the full benefit of your insights. Thanks again for your commitment to a stronger Republican party and for taking the time to write. Sincerely".  Rhodes scholar Richard Green "Dick" Lugar (1932-2019) was Mayor of Indianapolis, Indiana from 1968-1976, and he has represented Indiana as a Republican in the U.S. Senate since 1977, winning his 2006 re-election bid with 87% of the vote. Twice Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations (1985-1987 and 2003-2007), Lugar sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1996. In 2006, "Time" magazine named him as one of "America's 10 Best Senators". The goal Lugar states here was met under his chairmanship of the Senate campaign committee. Republicans, who had gained a Senate (but not a House) majority in the 1980 election, retained it through 1986.W.
