RICHARD H. POFF The judge from Virginia signs his name on this 5x3 card Signature: "Richard H. Poff", in blue ink. Typed text: "Autograph of:/ [signature]/ Richard H. Poff/ Member Of Congress, Sixth Virginia District,/ 1955-1957.", 5x3. Richard Harding Poff (1923-2011) was a U.S. congressman and judge who served in the U.S. House of Representatives representing Virginia's 6th congressional district and on Virginia's Supreme Court. Poff served in World War II, flying missions over Europe as a bomber pilot in England (1943-1945). He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his efforts. Elected to Congress in 1952, he was one of only two Republicans to sign the Southern Manifesto, which protested the ruling on Brown vs. Board of Education. During his time in the U.S. House, Poff sponsored the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). He is well-remembered for stating in the Congressional Record that the Act should be used only against organizations, and not against individuals. President Richard M. Nixon considered Poff for a position on the U.S. Supreme Court, but a personal conflict of interest precluded his nomination. Poff went on to become Justice and then Senior Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court, serving until his retirement. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
