RICHARD HALE
AFTRA membership application signed by opera baritone and actor
Ricahrd Hale in 1954
Document signed "Richard Hale". Blue and black ink notations
in unknown hand. 2 pages, 6x8½, 1 sheet, front and verso. With 6¼x3¼ initiation
fee receipt carbon copy with perforated left edge stapled at top edge. March
31, 1954. Membership form for the American Federation of Television and
Radio Artists. Hale (1892-1981) had a full and varied career in opera,
stage, movies and TV that spanned the 1920s to the 1970s. He got his start as an
opera singer. A baritone known for the richness of his voice, his on-stage
charisma and his canny interpretations of roles, he appeared in a series of
notable American premieres, including Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf and
Stravinsky's Les Noces. Hale wasn't as successful as a straight
actor. Most of his roles were uncredited or in the supporting cast, with
starring roles in Girl in the Case (1944), Port Said (1948) and
The Mirable of Our Lady of Fatima (1952). But he did keep busy, often as
in Middle Eastern or Native American roles or as killjoys. In all, he appeared
in 14 Broadway productions between 1914 and 1943 and over 130 movies and TV
shows between 1944 and 1978, with repeat apeparances in Family
Theatre (1951-1953), Four Star Playhouse (1953-1956), The
Adventures of Jim Bowie (1957-1958), Maverick (1960-1962), Wagon
Train (1957-1963), Rawhide (1959-1964), Perry Mason
(1957-1964), Bonanza (1966-1967) and Gunsmoke (1968-1973).
Trekkies may recognize him as Goro, tribal leader of a Native American tribe
(on another planet but, hey, it's Star Trek) in the 1968 episode The
Paradise Syndrome. Lightly toned and creased. Form was folded once
vertically and twice horizontally and unfolded. Receipt has light nicks in top
edge and carbon copy marks. Otherwise in fine condition.
