RICHARD HALLIBURTON
He pens a letter to the Tennessee Internal Revenue stating that he is not a resident of Tennessee and has not been for many years
Autograph Letter signed: "Richard Halliburton", 1p, 8¼x10¾. New York, N.Y., Sept. 18 [3 stamped receipt dates in December, 1938]. To Mr. Lipsconti. In full: "Every year for 17 years, the Tennessee Internal Revenue Service has written me letters in regard my Tenn. Income tax. And every year for 17 years I have answered that I am not a resident of Tennessee, and have not been since I came of age. My parents are legal residents of Memphis, but I am not. It would be a favor to us both if your department could put an end to this annual waste of time and postage." Halliburton (1900-1939) was a writer, lecturer, explorer and world traveler. Halliburton's books also include The Royal Road to Romance (1925), The Glorious Adventure (1927) and New Worlds to Conquer (1929) and Seven League Boots (1935). Halliburton was lost at sea in a typhoon in 1939 as he and his crew attempted to sail a Chinese junk, the Sea Dragon, from Hong Kong to San Francisco. 3x3 segment missing from upper left corner of page.Three receipt stamps from New York Internal Revenue offices touch text, which is fully legible. Creases touch "ton" in "Halliburton". Otherwise, fine condition.
