Autograph Sentiment signed: "Sincerely Yours/Richard Harding
Davis", 4½x3½. Richard Harding Davis (1864-1916) was managing editor of
Harper's Weekly magazine by the age of 26. The author of romantic novels
and short stories, he was best known as a war correspondent. In Cuba to
cover the revolution against Spain, he filed the famous story of the strip
search of a young Cuban woman, which did much to inflame American opinion,
but resigned in protest because William Randolph Hearst had changed his story to
say that male guards had conducted the search. When the U.S. sent troops to the
island, Davis did much to popularize Teddy Roosevelt and his "Rough Riders."
Covering World War I, he was captured by the German army in Belgium and
almost executed as a British spy before finally convincing his captors he
was an American reporter. Impressions in corners from previous inclusion in an
album. Vertical fold crosses "H" in signature. Fine condition.
