Unsigned but nearly complete autograph letter to fellow author Henry Tuckerman, scolding him for not paying a visit while in Boston
Autograph Letter, unsigned, 1 page 8x8. Addressed in his hand on verso to "Henry T. Tuckerman House". Remnants of wax seal. Edges missing, Including likely signature at lower edge, but nearly complete: "I was so vexed with you for not making time to come see me that I have half a mind not to avail myself of your kindness. But I am of a forgiving nature, and to prove that I am, will not only send by you what you offered to take, but lay you under the load of a further favor by enclosing something for [?]ld friend B. - which forward to him, if you please, in the way most convenient to yourself. But don't come to Boston again without calling." Richard Henry Dana, Sr. (1787-1879) was a poet, novelist and critic who wrote one of the first Gothic novels, Paul Felton (1822). A founding editor of the North American Review, Dana was outspoken in his criticisms of revered institutions. He accused his alma mater, Harvard University, of "smothering genius", and called Ralph Waldo Emerson and the other Transcendentalists "mad in their hearts." His son was the noted author, lawyer and social reformer Richard Henry Dana, Jr. (1815-1882).Henry T. Tuckerman (1813-1871) was a New York-based poet and critic, noted for his writings about Italy. Edges frayed and ragged. Multiple notches throughout letter. Toned and creased.
