RICHARD GATLING. Scarce signature: "R.J. Gatling/Hartford Conn./May 30th, 1894.", 4x2, matted to 7x5 (two surfaces). Imprinted background affixed to verso. By the 1850s, Richard Jordan Gatling (1818-1903) had become wealthy from agricultural inventions, such as machines for sowing rice and wheat. He is best known for inventing the rapid-fire Gatling gun, the first practical machine gun, patented in 1862. Slightly soiled. 2¼x¼-inch rectangular shading touches the "R.J.", shaded at right and left blank margins. Fine condition.
