RICHARD McDONALD
The co-founder of McDonald's answers a customer re: the quality and size of the chain's hamburgers.
TLS: "Richard J. McDonald", 1p, 8½x11. Bedford, N.H., 1984 July 26. To Wayne. In full: "In reply to your letter dated July 23rd, all McDonald hamburgers are made with 100% U.S. Government Inspected Beef. No fillers of any kind are ever used. In regard to the size of the hamburgers, there has been no change since my brother and I sold to the present owners. Delighted that you are a customer of McDonald's." Richard and his brother Maurice (known as Mac) opened a McDonald's restaurant in San Bernardino, California in 1940. In 1948, they scaled back the menu and opened a self-service, drive-through restaurant featuring 15¢ hamburgers, 20¢ malts, and 10¢ french fries. In 1954, the brothers hired Ray Kroc as franchise agent. In 1961, they sold McDonald's to Kroc. Richard McDonald devised the Golden Arches and other innovations, including "Millions Sold", which later became "Billions Sold". At Richard's death in July 1998, McDonald's Chairman Michael Quinlan stated, in part: "The global 'McFamily' of employees, franchises and suppliers owes a debt of gratitude to Dick McDonald and his late brother, Mac. The McDonald brothers never dreamed that the restaurant system they conceived...would eventually touch so many people throughout the world." Fine condition.
