Anniversary of WWII, 29-cent Allies landing in North Africa stamp affixed, postmarked
Indianapolis, IN, August 11, 1992, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Background of the 50th
Anniversary of World War II (1942) imprinted on verso. U.S. Navy ace Richard L. Bertelson
(1923-2015) had five "kills" while serving with the VF-29 during WWII, including three
in one day. He flew a Hellcat fighter on 88 combat missions from the carrier U.S.S. Cabot,
winning two Distinguished Flying Crosses and three Air Medals. Upper loops of signature
touch cancellation (all legible). Slightly creased. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso.
