clipping and photo of Turner affixed below his note. Richard L. Neuberger
(1912-1960) was born in the Portland, Oregon area, was educated at the
University of Oregon and became the Northwest correspondent for the New
York Times (1939-1954). He was elected to the State house of
representatives (1941-1942), served in the US Army (1942-1945) - upon his return
home, he was elected to the State senate (1949-1954) and the U.S. Senate
(1955-1960) where he served as an outspoken liberal until his death at age
47. His wife, Maurine Neuberger (1907-2000) was elected to replace him
serving from 1960-1967. In addition to his work with the New York Times,
Neuberger published 5 books; An Army of the Aged (1936), Our Promised
Land (1938), The Lewis and Clark Expedition (1951, Royal Canadian
Mounted Police (1953) and Adventures in Politics: We Go to the
Legislature (1954). Newspaper journalists Wallace Turner (1921-2010)
and William Lamber, while working for the Portland Oregonian won a
Pulitzer Prize in 1957 for their expose of vice and corruption in
Portland involving municipal officials and officers of the International
Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Warehousemen and Helpers of America,
Western Conference. During the investigation, Turner became associated with
Bobby Kennedy and ended up working in public relations in the Department of
Health, Education and Welfare (early 1960s) during the Kennedy administration.
Turner worked as a correspondent for the New York Times from the 1960s
through the 1980s. Left edge ragged from previous binding. Lightly creased and
toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
