RICHARD VOLKMANN ("LEANDER"). AQS: "Richard Volkmann/Leander", 1p, 5¼x7¼. Halle, 1881 August 3. Four lines in German, translated. In full: "It's difficult to walk alone, and very few/may succeed;/But if you want to try you have to/step out of yourself." German surgeon Richard von Volkmann (1830-1889) wrote poetry under the pen name of "Leander". Volkmann, the son of prominent physiologist Alfred Wilhelm Volkman (1800-1877), was considered one of the most brilliant German surgeons of the later 19th century. Specializing in surgery of the joints and extremeties as well as cancer surgery, Volkmann was associated with the Surgical Clinic at Halle from 1867 until his retirement. He was equally well known for his poetry and other writings, including Dreams by French Firesides, which is considered a classic in German literature. Many of Volkmann's stories were written while he was a war surgeon (Seven Weeks' War with Austria, 1966; Franco-Prussian War, 1870-1871). Slightly creased with fold, not at signature. Minor ink transference at blank areas. Glue stains at perimeter on verso (minor show through). Fine condition.
