RICHARD MALCOLM JOHNSTON
Flowery 19th century style response to an autograph request
Autograph Letter signed: "R. M. Johnston", 1 page, 5x8. Baltimore, 1888 July 21. To J. C. Lightfoot, Jr., Philadelphia. In full: "On my return from Georgia I find your favor. Thanking you for the compliment implicit in your polite invitation, I am yours very respectfully". Lawyer, teacher and author Richard Malcolm Johnston (1822-1898) wrote six novels and four collections of short stories, beginning with Georgia Sketches (1864), expanded into Dukesborough Tales (1871). His stories presented a rather sentimentalized portrait of rural folk in the antebellum South. Johnston served on the staff of Georgia Governor Joseph Brown during the Civil War. He moved to Baltimore after the war, but continued to spend much time in his native Georgia. Toned. Multiple mailing folds. Corners creased. Paper clip impression at top edge. Pin size hole at top edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
