Written on official Embassy of the United States of America letterhead. Amman, Jordon. February 16, 1982. Address to Ms. Sherry Sussman of the Women's Crisis Shelter in Las Vegas, Nevada. In full: "I am happy to respond to your request for a personally autographed photo for you "Celebrity Room" for a most worth-while cause. The program upon which you have embarked is to be admired and I am delighted that you included me. With best wishes for success". Richard Noyes Viets (b. 1930) began his career in 1955 as a junior officer with the U.S. Information Agency, serving in Afghanistan and Tunisia before working his way up through the Department of Commerce, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Agency for International Development. He was appointed a Foreign Service officer in 1962 assigned to Tokyo, Japan, Madras and New Delhi in India; later working as a deputy chief of mission in Bucharest, Romania and Tel Aviv, Israel. His ambassadorial break came when he was appointed the U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania in 1979, Ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 1981, and Ambassador to Portugal in 1987. Slightly toned. Light surface creases. Paper clip indent in top margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
