The U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania is shown giving a speech in this black and white photograph, signed in blue ink
Inscribed Photograph Signed: "To Kevin/with best wishes/Dick Schweiker/U.S.S." in blue ink. B/w, 8x10. Richard Schweiker (1926-2015) was President of American Olean Tile Company before winning election to a seat in the US House from Pennsylvania (1961-1969). He went on to win two full terms in the US Senate (1969-1981). At the Republican National Convention in 1976, Ronald Reagan, challenging President Ford for the nomination, announced as the convention opened that he would pick Schweiker as his running mate. The move backfired, losing Reagan conservative delegates instead of gaining him more liberal ones, and Ford was re-nominated. When Reagan gained the White House four years later, Schweiker joined his Cabinet as Secretary of Health and Human Services (1981-1983). After leaving government, Schweiker became President of the American Council of Life Insurance until his 1994 retirement. Fine condition.
