Richard Simmons (1948-2024) battled obesity for a number of years before opening an
innovative exercise studio that catered to the severely overweight. In 1980, he launched his
talk show, The Richard Simmons Show, which ran for four seasons. Simmons
successfully marketed his image to the public while writing self-help books, creating a
food maintenance program, and producing exercise videos. Over the years, he became a
staple on late night TV, bringing his irreverent humor and indefatigable energy to The Tonight
Show and Late Night with David Letterman. Simmons has also appeared as a guest star (as
himself) on a number of primetime series, including Arrested Development (2003) and The
Tony Danza Show (2005). Lightly toned. Pencil notes in an unknown hand on verso.
