RICHARD STRAUSS
Just turned 19, Strauss signed this 3-page handwritten letter to a concert master, requesting a critique of his new violin concerto.
ALS: "Richard Strauss", 2½ pages, 4½x7. (Munich), 1883 June 12. To "Concertmaster". In German with English translation. In part: "Permit me the liberty to make use of your acquaintance, which I had the pleasure to make last summer, in such a way, that I allow myself to send you my enclosed violin concerto which has now appeared in print, asking you to honor it with your friendly and not too strict judgment. Concertmaster Walter has Vienna, where I was so fortunate as to receive an excellent critique by Dr. [Eduard] Hanslick. Altogether, I have been very fortunate this year: a serenade for wind ensemble was performed...." Written the day after his 19th birthday.Strauss, who had just left the University of Munich to concentrate on his music, sends his Violin Concerto (not present), which he had first performed with Benno Walter in December 1882. Strauss was composing by the age of six, having received basic instruction from his father, a virtuoso horn player. This was his only formal training. Strauss' first symphony premiered when he was seventeen, his second (in New York) when he was twenty. By that time, Strauss had directed his energies toward conducting. In 1885, he succeeded Hans von Bülow as Conductor of the orchestra in Meiningen. For the next forty years, Strauss conducted orchestras in Munich, Weimar, Berlin and Vienna. Lightly creased. Soiled on verso of blank integral leaf.
