Tauber (1891-1948, born Richard Denemy in Linz, Austria), a talented tenor with a voice well-suited for Mozartian tenor roles, had made his debut at Chemnitz in 1913 and had appeared on most of the world's greatest operatic stages within a decade. Tauber, who fled Hitler's Germany for England, appeared there on radio programs and in concert and was also an acclaimed conductor and composer, writing an orchestral suite, two operettas and dozens of songs. He had appeared in German films from 1930-1933, and later made Heart's Desire (1935), A Clown Must Laugh (1936), April Blossoms (1937) and Waltz Time and The Lisbon Story (both 1946), among other films.
