RICHARD TONRY
The corrupted Congressman poses for official-looking 5x6¾ photograph, signs name in black ink
Photograph signed: "Richard Tonry" in black ink. B/w, 5x6¾. Richard Tonry (1935-2012) was a Louisiana politician who served as the state's U.S. Representative for four months. Torny graduated from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 1967 and practiced law within the city for almost a decade before being elected to the Louisiana House of Representative in the first ever non-partisan blanket primary held by the state in 1975. He served for two years before declaring his candidacy for Congress after the longtime Democrat incumbent retired, and Tonry narrowly defeated Republican Bob Livingston; however, Tonry was soon under investigation by the U.S. Attorney for allowing subordinates to steal votes by stuffing ballot boxes in St. Bernard Parish, a suburb of New Orleans, as well as illegally receiving campaign funds beyond the $1,000 federal donation limit. He ultimately resigned and pleaded guilty, serving six-months in federal prison. Toned. Corners creased. Light surface creases. Ink stamp on verso. Ink notes on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
