RICHARD TUCKER
Photograph of the operatic tenor signed in black ink
Inscribed printed photograph signed: "To Sarnd's -/best
wishes/Richard Tucker", in black ink, B/w 8¼x10. Richard Tucker
(1913-1975) was a cantor before training for a career as an operatic
tenor. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1945, four years after
his brother-in-law, the fellow opera great Jan Peerce. Tucker, considered by
many the finest American-born and trained opera talent of his generation,
starred in the first-ever full live opera production on TV (Aida,
1949). Tucker is the only person to have had his funeral conducted on the
Metropolitan Opera stage. The Richard Tucker Music Foundation gives
generous vocal music grants and scholarships. Heavy creases throughout, esp. on
outer margins and corners. Top left corner creased behind photograph. Corners
worn and creased. Toned. Soiled. Stain on right margin. Light scratches across
Tucker's image. Otherwise, fine condition.
