card. RICHARD W. THOMPSON (1809-1900) served as a Whig
representing Indiana in Congress (1841-1843, 1847-1849) and as Hayes'
Secretary of the Navy (1877-1880). He declined three presidential
appointments: U.S. Minister to Austria (Taylor), Recorder of the General Land
Office (Fillmore) and Judge of the Court of Claims (Lincoln). He had formerly
been Commander of Camp Thompson, Indiana and a Provost Marshal (1861-1865).
Lightly stained at edges. Ink slightly smudged. Otherwise, fine condition.
