A manuscript letter signed by the Indiana Congressman and by the
Commander in Chief of the Pacific Squadron
Manuscript Letter Signed: "R.W. Thompson" as Hayes'
Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 7¾x10. Washington, 1878 April 30. To Mr.
M. Jackson, Late Cadet Midshipman, Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. In full:
"Your resignation as a Cadet-Midshipman in the Navy of the United States
tendered in your letter of the 26 instant is hereby accepted." Also
signed: "C.R.P. Rodgers", Rear Admiral, as Superintendent of the
Naval Academy, dated May 1, 1878, as receiving and forwarding this letter.
RICHARD WIGGINGTON THOMPSON served as a Whig representing Indiana in
Congress (1841-1843, 1847-1849) and as Hayes' Secretary of the Navy
(1877-1880). He declined three presidential appointments: U.S. Minister to
Austria (Taylor), Recorder of the General Land Office (Fillmore) and Judge of
the Court of Claims (Lincoln). He had formerly been Commander of Camp Thompson,
Indiana and a Provost Marshal (1861-1865). C. R. P. RODGERS (1819-1892),
nephew of Oliver H. and Matthew Perry and John Rodgers, served in the Seminole,
Mexican and Civil Wars. He was Superintendent at Annapolis from
1874-1878, when he was made Commander in Chief of the Pacific Squadron,
serving until 1880. Heavily creased. Toned. Lightly soiled. Normal mailing
folds. Corners lightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine
condition.
